Trans Fluid Change
 

Has anyone done a fluid change on the auto themselves? Is there a procedure for purging the whole system?

A drain plug is provided for the trans case. That's only about 1/2 of the fluid contained within the trans. Some is better than none, make sure you use the exact fluid specified, as the Hyundai's do not tollerate substitute fluid well, and using the incorrect fluid will void your warranty!!!

There is a procedure to replace all the fluid by tapping into the trans cooler lines, it is a bit more expensive, and is better left to the dealer if your skills are not up to it. I say leave it to the dealer as the local monkey at the oil change place will pour anything red into the trans, including kool-aid, to get you out the door.

The dealer will service the car with the proper fluid, and keep your warranty valid.

Tis true what JiminIndy says: A regular grease monkey place will try to put Dextron III or II in your trans. That's a mistake, you need to use the Hyundai spec stuff. And you can't flush the torque converter properly without tapping into the coolant lines. So shop around, and ask a lot of questions. Hyundai dealer will do it right (hopefully), but will cost a small fortune.

I know on my Dodge Stratus I was able to disconnect the lines from the radiator. After draining a portion, and refilling started the car in neutral and let it run for 1 minute to pump the rest of the old fluid out.

The dealer here is charging 116.95 for a flush and fill which still seems expensive. That service would have totally fresh fluid right? Not the recirculating scam they pull at the oil change place.

If the dealership (stealership) will do it for $116... jump on it, and save your paperwork/receipts to show proof in case you ever need to file a warranty claim.
