2001 Tiburon Tranmission swap??
Have a 2001 Tiburon FX2.0 with an Automatic Transmission. Tiburon parts are hard to come by here in Upstate SC, but was wondering in an Elantra 2.0 Engine and Trans are the same. I know Accents are not as they are Alpha Engines and mine is a Beta.
The transmission is completely gone. It leaks fluid from the half axle boot as fast as you can pour it in, and slips so bad it will not drive up hill. So if the engine is the same the same, can I do a manual swap too? What would I need from the other car to do this? Is the Elantra going to be a direct drop in (Auto or Manual)? IF the Elantra is not the same, what is the same? |
Yes, the Elantra is essentially the same so the engine/trans will swap however doing a manual swap will be a major headache. If you really want a manual, sell the auto and buy one with a manual.

Honda manual swaps are fairly painless, they even put the clutch pedal mount in an automatic car.
Was hoping that Hyundai did the same. Havent really looked into a manual swap for the Tiburon, was just looking for some feedback to see if anyone here has tried it, and what they ran into. |
Pulled an Automatic Transmission from a '99 Elantra.
After Degreasing it, I found the model number tag. It said Hyundai Translead Model #28830/S0-300041778 and the production date was June 12, 2004 which kind threw me. Was wondering if the guy pulled the wrong tranny. Would this be a factory warranty replacement transmission? Anyone gander a guess. I have never heard of Translead. Got the Tranny for $90 plus an $80 pull fee. I dont want to rebuild it unless I need to, but plan to change the Tranny filter and gasket. |

Was wondering if the guy pulled the wrong tranny. No, look for a square pad centered on bell housing, it'll have 5 letter stamped in first row, and 5 digits in second row.. The first row designate specifica of trans, speeds, ratio of drive unit... first row should closely match yours, except maybe 1 letter, I have acess to code chart somewhere, I see it and not bother to remember where it is ... Translead is the HYUNDAI contracted/official repair center/supplier of HYUNDAI Re-Man automatic trans... that why it has the ID tag affixed to it,, this is in essence their VIN tag to ID the trans if it where to come back Got the Tranny for $90 plus an $80 pull fee. I realize this is a very old thread but i was wondering if I can use a automatic transmission from a 2000 elantra in my 2001 tiburon . Both have 13 bolt bottom pans and everything is the same except the tiburon has a speed senor for the speedometer and the elantra has a cable. Can I simply put my speed sensor where the cable was?

Yes you can, as long as it was the 2.0l 4cyl engine.
I just swapped over everything. While you have it out, I would recommend replacing the speed sensors with new ones. I used the ones on the Elantra, and had issues, even though the tranny was working ok in the Elantra, causing premature shift into overdrive. Also, the fail point on the first tranny was the CV seals. I would replace both of those, and if the tranny came out of a front wrecked Elantra, inspect the casing around those seals as well for cracks. We pulled 2 that had bad cracks on the bottom side from wheel impact damage. |
Thank you so much. So use Tiburon sensors and just put the Tiburon sensor where the elantra cable went? Did your speedometer read right?
