I just got a 2003 Tiburon. Anybody know of any tricks or mods to make better gas mileage?

Replace the spark plugs, set the gap to the smallest recommend parameter.
Replace the air filter
Get higher pressure tires and fill tires up hard
Make sure the timing belt is adjusted to correct tolerance
Use only 87 octane
Visit assorted gas stations and mix your gas
Don't fill your tank all the way, save weight
Take those silly flags off
Accelerate slow
Keep foot off the gas
Stay in the slow lane
Keep a long distance to the next car
Observe posted speed limits
Remove you roof rack
Use thinner motor oil like 5w/30
Drive slow-coast a lot
Anticipate stopping at lights
Drive in such a way to minimize using the brakes
Take excess weight out of the car
Combine trips
Walk or ride a bike

First, ishboo313, what engine? 2.0L 4-cyl or 2.7L V6?


That will only help if the plugs are worn and the filter is dirty. First check before replacing.


DO NOT fill the tires up "hard". Adding SOME pressure will help economy. Going from 30-32 to about 36-38 will help slightly. Any more than that can be dangerous.


There is really no adjustment you can do to add fuel economy unless the tensioner is faulty. If there is no problem with the belt, leave it alone but be sure to replace it at 60k miles.


While using 87 octane is correct for your car, you really won't see an increase in mileage by changing octane levels. Using higher than 87 is just a waste of money.


This is bad advice. Mixing the gas is not smart. You do, however, want to try other brands to see what runs best in your Tiburon. Some brands have more ethanol than others. The more ethanol a fuel has added, the lower the fuel economy will be. So try different brands but don't mix them.


More bad advice. IIRC, my 2004 Tib has a 14.5 gallon tank. Since gasoline weighs approx 6 pounds per gallon, a full tank of gasoline weighs only 87 pounds. Driving with half a tank would only save you 44 pounds and you will have to stop for gas twice as often.


What "silly flags"? Where does it say he has "silly flags" on his Tiburon?

Since when do Tiburons come with roof racks?


How does walking or riding a bike improve the fuel economy of his Tiburon? That will save him fuel because he won't be driving the car but that's not what he asked.


Finally, some good advice.

thank a lot NovaResource , I just want to know if you have a gt or a 4 cyl, and what is your mpg. My tib is getting 15mpg and I just want to know if there is any mods i can do to increse that

Mine was a V6 automatic. I was getting about21-24 mpg on average with 70%-highway/30%-city driving. Highest ever was 28 mpg.

15 mpg with a 4-cyl seems a little low.
