high rpm at 60mph

I just bought a 2003 tiburon and im wondering if it's normal that at 60mph im getting 3000rpm? Its a 5 speed manual transmission.

What size wheels/tires and what engine? Also, what gear were you in at 60-mph and 3000 rpm?

markcold Apr 9, 2012 07:04 PM

Driving on 5th gear on the highway it does 3000 RPM at 60MPH. If I go 70MPH or 80MPH it goes up to 3500 RPM. It doesnt seem normal does it? My corolla did 2600 RPM on 5th gear at 60MPH.

What size wheels/tires and what engine? There are 2 different 5-speed depending on the engine.

markcold Apr 9, 2012 07:27 PM

It's 17 inch wheels i think and its the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine.

Than that is normal. The 4-cyl engine 5-speed manual has a 5th gear ratio of 0.837 and a final drive ratio of 4.056. With the 215/45-17 tires (24.6" diameter) the engine RPM at 60-mph would be 2800-rpm.

70-mph would be 3250-rpm

80-mph would be 3700-rpm

Thanks for the answer!

Seems like it would make the car kind of inefficient no? Seems like it burns a lot of gas for such a small car too...

That's just it, it's not a small car. The GK Tiburon weighs just about 3000-lbs. Your old Corolla was about 2400-lbs. That's a 600 pound difference. That's Physics 101. Put three 200-lbs guys in that Corolla with you and see if it gets the same mileage as it does with just you in it.
