Default power loss (98' tiburon)

Ok, I signed up on here to see if anyone can help me out. My girlfriend has a 98 tiburon and when driving it loses almost all power and can barely move even with the throttle pressed all the way. The check engine light comes on, it does not stay on all the time it'll only last for a short period of time and then when the car restarts it is fine again. After driving after restart the car does it again. The first time this happened, the car completely died and wouldn't start. We replaced the battery and alternator and now the car holds a charge but still does not drive right. I am not too familiar with the car itself, I'm used to working on Honda's, EVO's, STI's, and turbo toyota. I have never worked on a Hyundai.

Any input would be appreciated.
