I have a 2006 Tuscon with an automatic transmission.

Anyone know where the drain plug is for
the transmission fluid ? (The manual that comes with
the car does NOT show a diagram or give any details
for automatic tran drain plug).

I also understand I have to use "proprietary" ATF that I
will need to get from Hyundai called "SP III" ?

I did see that large bolt on bottom of trans case but
wasn't sure if it was the actual drain plug. It looked
unusually large and flush to the case. The black shield
below that plug also looked like it may interfere w/the
draining......

Thought I would point out that CASTROL makes two varieties
of ATF that is compatible with SP III !!!!!

I called a few Hyundai dealerships for fluid and one of the dealerships
told me that use "CASTROL ATF +4" fluid which is compatible with SP III.

I went to PEP BOYS and saw that Castrol actually makes two varieties
that is compatible with SP III:

1. CASTROL ATF +4
2. CASTROL IMPORTED VEHICLES

The "CASTROL IMPORTED VEHICLES" quart actually says on the back
that is for Hyundai vehicles and compatible with SP III fluid !!!!

The price on the "CASTROL IMPORTED VEHICLES" is $4.99 and for
this month only (May 2010) Pep Boys have it on sale for 2 for $5.00.

 

Hi guy, I see the same plug on mine. it does look like the frame will get in the way of the draining stream. I'm only looking to drain and fill. I'm thinking of jacking up the drivers side to let the ATF flow more into the catch pan, trying to miss the frame. I'm also going to clean the frame and tape a lump of something on there to help direct the amount that does hit my frame into the catch pan. This is the first time i've changed it i'm at 90,000 so i was told there is a rare chance the AT will not like the fluid and quit working. If this happens the only thing i can do is try to put the old fluid back and and pray that it accepts it.

well that's nice. but i don't actually need it. I put a piece of tape on the frame with some tissue behind it. worked just fine... most of it fell straight thru the little dip on the frame where it was supposed to anyway.
i used casteroil multi vehicle import aft. it was Diamond sf3

I doubt that would be very good for your engine. Maybe you should have used a brand name engine oil like one from Valvoline, Pennzoil or Castrol.

 

did this the other day,removed auto trans cooler line that runs to radiator(pretty sure top one)you"ll know when you start engine,it will squirt out.Is a short line so you"ll need a hose to larger to fit over.Run this into bucket/drain pan,I used
A longish length of garden hose and put into auto filler tube.Pushed in a funnel to fit,started car,fluid pumps out(not that fast)while I poured new fully synthetic trans fluid into filler tube.When the old fluid changes color from black to red,i scooted over and stopped engine.Put cooler hose back on.Put car into neutral,checked level and topped up,as necessary.So easy.You can find as I did on YouTube,takes no time at all.Don't touch drain plugs,and no need to take off pan/filter unless major issue with transmission.
