Hi all.

Today I had a strange moment with my 2004 Tucson 2l CRDi. We had been on a short run of around 20Km and the car was fine all the time, it started on a couple of occasions no issues. We arrived in our home town to collect some goods and when I tried to start the car to go home, it turned over fine but would not fire. I tried 3 or 4 times but no good. I waited for a minute or two and tired again and it started as normal. I wondered if there may be an issue with a vapour lock in the fuel system as today it was 23 deg C which is warmer than it has been for a while. We have only had the car around 3 weeks so I do not know if this is in it's history.

Many thanks.

It is a 2004 and not knowing anything about it's history, it could be anything.

If this is the first diesel you have owned, you should be aware they can provide good service, but also require good maintenance.

My suggestion would be to read the owner's manual and become familiar with it's operating characteristics among which is regular good maintenance and quality fuel..

In the owner's manual are maintenance schedules and frequency.
Diesels usually require only fuel and air to run, but sometimes other things can prevent fuel from getting to where it needs to be.
How any miles are on the odometer?
Since you have no idea of what maintenance was performed and when, it would be a good move to have the engine checked and serviced ,.(fuel, air and oil filters)

Diesels don't have vapor lock problems, , so I would not be concerned about that.

Thanks for the reply Hanky.

I have had many diesels and do 99% of my own servicing, work etc. I had a similar issue with my C3 1.4HDi a while ago and touch-wood it has not returned.

With regards servicing, I have ordered fuel, oil and air filters, coolant, engine oil, timing belt, tensioner and idler and a new water pump. The car has just reached 200,000Km and was owned by the previous owner from new. I would say by the condition that it was well looked after but as I have no idea when the timing belt was changed I always take the cautious approach

Thanks for the info on vapour locks not being an issue in a diesel, we all live and learn

Thanks again for your reply.

John
