Default How the hell are you supposed to

How are you supposed to line up the timing marks to change the timing belt if you have the harmonic balancer removed ??

if I remove the harmonic balancer I can't get the engine to rotate because the balancer has teeth that grip the crank so you can turn it to line up the marks.



Im dumbfounded. Is their a special tool for this or am I just messing a step?

If you took off the harmonic balancer (and the belt is still on)
then try putting the crank shaft bolt back in and turning the engine that way.
If you take out the spark plugs then it will be way easier to turn the engine.

i did. The problem is the bolt alone will not turn the engine. The balancer has teeth on it that the grab crank.

Not sure what you're talking about.
The first pulley on the crankshaft is the Harmonic balancer
The second one with the teeth is the timing sprocket.

After the pulley is taken off, the lower timing belt cover is exposed
and can be taken out after removing the bolts holding it on.
Then, the bolt is put back into place
and the engine is cranked into position so the timing marks line up.
Use a socket wrench on the bolt.

The bolt should just screw back in
and when tight, it should turn the engine over
Taking out the spark plugs aids in turning the engine.

Look at the video .. time 10:54 minutes in

thanks. My harmonic balancer is a solid unit not two.
Have a look.

if you look at closely you will a small hole just above the center. That hole lines up with a notch on the crank when the balancer is on. This is the only way I can turn the engine. The bolt by itself will not spin it all no matter how hard I try.

Well, I am sorry. For most cars, the bolt does turn the engine.
It suppose to lock onto the crankshaft sprocket by that hole
And is held in there by the bolt.
Most cars that I have seen all use that bolt to turn the engine.
And some require the spark plugs out to make it easy enough to do that
The belt must still be on.

Update-
i managed to get all the marks lined up and remove the pulley , By holding one of the cam bolts with a socket while I slowly unscrewed the crank pulley bolt. All good now. Thanks.
