How to set timing marks 2001 xg300

When I allign the timing marks and try to put tensioner on timing belt 2 of the gears move. Do they have to be alligned exactly with marks.

Umm,,,, yes, the marks need to align with the reference marks.. start getting teeth off, engine may ding valves, be out of time that engine wont run proper..

Timing
Engine went out of time because crank sproket came off so I cannot mark old belt. I finnally got the marks on by useing little paper clips you squeeze to open. I thought I had all lines on the 5 sprockets lined up. Top dead center on crank and the white dots to the tabs which meant the blue marks on each sprocket lined up. When I put back together engine runs but when you let off gas pedal it stalls. Is there any adjust to move the timing, like with a distributor or something.
