Question for the experts

So I love my XG 350 but something happened and I wanted to get your advice before continuing.

1. Car was driving great. Yesterday I backed out of a parking lot and the car hesistated and then lunged backwards with the engine almost dying out. I put it in drive and it was fine all the way home.

2. That night I went to drive to the store, got two blocks, tried to leave a stop sign and the transmission would not engage. It just reved. Reverse worked but nothing else.

3. Today, when you crank it at first the transmission will engage (both in drive and reverse) but only for a few minutes then it just revs. So I changed the tranny fluid just to mark that off the list. It's still doing the same thing but now I think I hear a slight whine coming from the top of the bellhousing near the dipstick.

Is there anything else I can try doing myself before the dreaded transmission shop? Soleniod or sensor or something? I though I would check with you all first before getting a tow truck and all that jazz.

Thanks!

No expert here !
What year?
If vehicle has some electronic controls might try for code.
Have to take these one at a time.

Hey Hanky, it's a 2004. Yep, very true. I'm trying to think of everything I can

If I were to tell you this or that is the problem, that would not be fair to you. Certain tests need to be done to confirm what is or is not working.

If it was all that simple the trans shops would starve .
