XG300 engine light comes on, engine runs rich

Hi all, I have a 2000 Grandeur (XG300) with 85k klms and I'm wondering if anyone here can identify these symptoms:

Engine light comes on sometimes during the first kilometer from cold.

Engine light will always come on when warm during a long descent with throttle closed.

When the light is on, car drives almost normally except idle is up to around 1100RPM and engine is running VERY rich (smelly exhaust etc).

This condition can be cleared by turning motor off and waiting about 10 secs before re-starting.

I had my mechanic pull the codes and he found P1159 plus another which I forget. He tried replacing the MAF sensor with a new Bosch unit and the problem seemed worse (light on more frequently) so he put back the original.

I've been worried about giving the car to one of the local Hyundai dealers, because I've spoken to them and they say that all they can do is keep replacing intake related components until they find the right one!

Given dealer spare parts prices in Australia, I could end up paying $1500 - $2000 for them to experiment at my expense (maybe that's what they want!).

If anybody has experienced this condition and can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Thanks, Rick

NEED ALL THE CODES !!

There is service bulletin for USA on how to diagnose/repair per " this code with this code" set...

The 3.5 with P-11xx codes is royal junk and MAJOR PAIN in backside... glad to see that system gone, though DELPHI is not much better, but easier to repair though.

Hi sbr711, thanks for your reply. Where would I find that info on diagnosing a fault by combining multiple codes?

thanks, Rick
