Default Hyundai Excel (1995) Ignition Problem

hi all,

I'm not sure if this is posted in the right place but I couldn't find an excel forum. I have an intermittent problem with my girlfriend's 1995 excel (2 door, 1.5L G4EK engine). Sometimes in the morning after being parked overnight, there will be no spark. Other times there will be spark. Once there IS spark, the engine will start and run with no issues for the rest of the day/week (even if shut off and restarted several times).

I've had a quick look at the ignition system which seems to be a solid-state coil pack.. I can't see anything else in the Ignition system (no control module that i can see, cannot see a distributor). I have no experience working on excels but I am a capable home mechanic, having rebuilt and restored a number of cars and engines.

Can anyone please let me know what might be causing this intermittent loss of spark at the coils? I have ruled out the leads, and have ruled out the 12v supply to the coils. I am looking for some knowledgeable advice before I go and buy a replacement coil pack, hoping that will solve the issue.

any help would be appreciated

thanks
