Exclamation my excel, electircal problem?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 1994 (Australia) 2 door Hyundai Excel Sprint 4 speed manual, i bought it with all of my savings. It's the second one ive ever bought out of 4 cars and i really love this model car, its a really cheap way to get around, and it looks pretty cool.

But I have had a problem with the car turning off like 30 seconds after i start it and start driving (usually in second gear), i have to restart it after it stops and it seems like all of the electrics just stop, then i restart it again and keep driving without stopping ( manual).

It happens regularly like 3 or 4 times in a 15 minute slow stop/start drive.
Its really annoying and im worried about it.

I have noticed that the one of the symbol lights is always on even though the button is off. It's the light with the 3 vertical squiggly lines.

Can any body tell me what might be wrong and if it is a costly thing to fix?
Im a uni student and virtually have no money so i am hoping i may be able to fix it myself, but i can take it to a mechanic later this week but i think its best i have an idea of what the problem is before i go to the mechanic.

Thanks regards Michael.

You need to see if you have any trouble codes. Here's some instructions on how to do it, and what the values mean:

Here is a TSB on the condition you describe. It's for automatic trans, but I bet it's relevant to your problem too.

Thanks mate ill get on to that as soon as i find a tester to borrow..

I'll need to get my hands on some diagrams to know which parts are which but i think its worth a shot, the instructions are easy to follow.

Where it says
To erase any diagnostic codes, disconnect battery ground cable for 15 seconds and the ECM (ECU) memory will be erased.
Does that mean that only the codes i have changed are reset? Or is that referring to all of the computer codes being reset to default..

Disconnect the battery to erase the trouble codes and reset the system to see if the same trouble codes come back again after repair.
