Hyundai Elantra While not much larger than the accent, the Elantra offers similar room, but a sportier look and feel, as well as more power.

Default EMERGENCY-brake or not

2000 hyundia elantra failed ma.insp. park brake works but not good enough. i adjusted so its very tight when pulled up. checked brakes, drums smooth and not worn no ribs or groves. shoes have about 3/4 thickness left,20,000 miles on them . made sure they were adjusted ok,put car in drive e-brake on, car does not move (so they are holding).give it gas car creaps forward. what else can i try to make e-brake hold at about 2000 rpm .(state law)

I think the mechanic wrong. None of my cars could have the parking brake hold the car with the accelerator pressed and the engine spinning 2000-rpm. Are you sure that's the law? Most states are anywhere from 1,000-1,300 rpm.

UPDATE: The mechanic is wrong. The law in Massachusetts is "approximately 1,200 to 1,300 RPMs": RMV - 540 CMR 4.00
4.04 Procedures for Inspection of Non-Commercial Motor Vehicles

(4) Brakes. (Non Commercial Vehicles)
(a) The inspector may operate the vehicle in the inspection bay and test the parking and service brake. The parking brake on all vehicles will be tested by accelerating the motor to approximately 1,200 to 1,300 RPMs with the vehicle in the lowest forward gear against the brake in the applied position. The vehicle will be rejected if the parking brake will not hold. The service brakes will be tested at a speed of between four and eight MPH. Service brakes must be reasonably equalized so that the vehicle does not pull noticeably to either side when applied. A test with the brake meter shall be made at a speed of 15 to 25 MPH in all questionable cases.

Umm, them little drums will only meant to hold so much load, and trying to drive away at 2000 rpm is rather exceeding that limit..

Normal test typically is at idle with hand brake applied.. sounds like your state test is flawed.

When I was NYS inspoector, handbrake firm in 2-4 clicks was good to go, exceedingly high handle (no reserve) was close to reject.
