First you need to make sure the latching part of the lock is actually getting into the latched position.
It usually slides over a round loop and when the trunk lid is pushed down far enough the latch will hold.
Sometimes, the loop gets loose and goes down too far for the lock fork to latch.They are usually adjustable.
If the latching section is broken, the only thing you can do is to replace it.
