Possibly a bad ground wire. It's got to be electrical. I'd suggest a better mechanic.

2 of the mechanics were Hyundai guys from a dealership. I'm thinking I can't get any better than that. Anyway, where are these ground wires? I would think they would have looked at that given everything else had been replaced. Thanks.

Ok, when the gas tank is full the gauge reads between "e" and 1/4 tank. I'm hearing from the mechanics that if it were a ground wire it would either not work at all or peg out. They said they checked the wiring. So, any new suggestions?

New mechanic. I love my '02 Accent, but have yet to find a good mechanic at a Hyundai dealer. I've found an ASE-certified local mechanic who is excellent and services my Hyundai. I'm cheap, and if it were me, and my car were a '99, I would use a trip odometer and not worry about it. I have 184,000 miles on my '02 and plan on driving it until it falls apart around me.

I have been using the trip odometer but it really ticks me off that I can't get this fixed. Whatever could be wrong with Hyundai that their certified mechanics aren't receiving the training they need? I'm really disgusted and thinking this will be my last Hyundai purchase.

There are a lot of "mechanics" that can't find their backside with both hands when it comes to electrical matters, and I agree that for whatever you can't understand & do yourself, you need to find another mechanic. For your current problem, you need to find out how your gauge works and then do a bit of testing. There are 3 wires associated with your fuel gauge, 1 wire will be ground (this won't be a continuous wire, but most likely just short pieces from a device to either chassis or body), 1 wire will be +12 volts, and 1 will be signal. I would suspect that you may have a bad connection somewhere, depending on how your gauge works, you could have no response - that would be no power so either the +12 or ground would be "open". It could be "pegged" - in this case I'd suspect the signal feed. You seem to have some response which could indicate a poor connection (probably at the gauge end somewhere) in the power wires or it could be a bad level sensor. What you need is a multi-meter and some knowledge of how to use it, and then you need a wiring diagram to see where the connections are. I would first see what the level sensor provides as output, then I'd check for continuity (not rocket science, you're just looking for a "continuous connection", one without breaks). If you get a high resistance reading in one of the paths, that would make me suspect a badly corroded contact or partly disconnected wire.

The hyundai mechanics should be able to tell you how your gauge works, ie., does a pegout mean no power and a no-response mean no signal or the other way around? They should also be able to tell you how many ohms the level sender has when the tank is Empty, and how many when Full. If they're friendly and don't know what the problem is or how to find it, maybe they can give you the wiring diagram that's associated with the fuel system.

Did you take it to a dealership to get fixed or did you just go to a friwho works for Hyundai and is doing this on his own time in his yard? I'd suggest going to the dealership.

The quality of Hyundai's products has nothing to do with the quality of the training this "mechanic" has. He might be nothing more than a parts chaser at the dealership and is telling you he's a mechanic. Saying you won't buy another Hyundai because of one moron is foolish.

Again, if this wansn't done at a dealership, the guy is a hack. Go to a dealer to have it fixed. They have to figure out the problem.
