Default 2001 Accent Speedometer malfunctioning

Just recently I went on a road trip and by the time I got back home, my speedometer was going 0-120 and all over the place any time I had my foot on the gas and I was going forward. I've found it doesn't move when I'm reversing, but it bounces around when I'm going forward. Any ideas on what the issue may be? Has anyone had this issue before and what did you do? Thanks for the help

There is a speed sensor that is supposed to send electrical signals to the speedometer for it to function AND control transmission shifting. Since you did not mention any problem with shifting, there could be a problem with the speedometer section in the instrument cluster. That will need to be checked for connections, signal etc.
