Default 2003 Accent GT has power problem

2003 Hyundai GT 3 door with 230,000 miles! Wife absolutely loves her car and will not junk it...was having problems getting power...seems to idle fine most of the time, give it gas and it still revs...put it in gear and go a short distance and it loses power , needed to push clutch back in to get revs...release clutch..go a lil further...push in clutch to get revs again to move...repeat! . I stopped driving it a few weeks ago when I was losing power, so I turned a

round and headed home...heard a big BOOM under the hood and the cabin filled with white smoke! Still made it home, in the mountains, with hardly any power...probably wore my clutch out a good bit getting home. It took more than several attempts to get up the 2 miles of mountain hills.

I thought it maybe the catylitic converter being clogged, my buddy the mechanic, who did not witness the problem seems to lean toward an electrical problem.
