Condition of the Timing Belt
Hi folks,
I have recently bought a car with milage of 138000 KM, made in 2009, the previous owner told me that he replaced the timing belt at 110000. Today, I decided to visually inspect the top part of the timing belt and found out that the timing belt looks very shiny (see the photos attached). I have noticed a marks on the timing, belt "made in Slovenia," which makes me believe the timing belt was indeed changed. Do u think it is dangerous to a timing belt in such condition, or it is a normal condition ? https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hyu...59f1015005.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hyu...a04044f3e2.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hyu...46012f93aa.jpg |
I wonder if the tensioner pulley has locked up. The belt's backside is too smooth.

Is it dangerous?

I don't know if this timing belt has been replaced or not. I would not feel comfortable driving much longer without knowing that the pulleys are good. There is a possibility that the timing belt has been replaced without replacing the tensioner. it is also possible that a new tensioner has been put in and it was defective. It's not the news you'd like to hear. |
For what it is worth, If you really depend on this car to not let you down and cost a small fortune to repair.
All Hyundai engines are interference engines. What that means is; If the timing belt breaks while the engine is running the camshaft stops moving the valves , but the pistons are still moving up and down a few seconds and that is all it needs to bend those stationary valves and you can see the $$$$$ growing wings. If any doubt,,,,,replace the belt and tensioner , it's a lot cheaper than part of the engine assy.like a head, cam etc. |
