Hi folks,

I have recently bought a car with milage of 138000 KM, made in 2009, the previous owner told me that he replaced the timing belt at 110000. Today, I decided to visually inspect the top part of the timing belt and found out that the timing belt looks very shiny (see the photos attached). I have noticed a marks on the timing, belt "made in Slovenia," which makes me believe the timing belt was indeed changed. Do u think it is dangerous to a timing belt in such condition, or it is a normal condition ?

 

I wonder if the tensioner pulley has locked up. The belt's backside is too smooth.

 

Do u think it is dangerous , or it still good for another 20000 KM ? and do u think the point that this one labeled as made in Slovenia means that it was already replaced?

I don't know if this timing belt has been replaced or not.
I would not feel comfortable driving much longer without knowing that the pulleys are good.

There is a possibility that the timing belt has been replaced without replacing the tensioner. it is also possible that a new tensioner has been put in and it was defective.

It's not the news you'd like to hear.

 

For what it is worth, If you really depend on this car to not let you down and cost a small fortune to repair.
All Hyundai engines are interference engines. What that means is;
If the timing belt breaks while the engine is running the camshaft stops moving the valves , but the pistons are still moving up and down a few seconds and that is all it needs to bend those stationary valves and you can see the $$$$$ growing wings.
If any doubt,,,,,replace the belt and tensioner , it's a lot cheaper than part of the engine assy.like a head, cam etc.
