I have a 2007 Accent GS. I am trying to replace the transmission fluid (manual transaxle oil) I am supposed to be using 75W-85, but i cant find that in a normal auto parts store and i was wondering if i can use the 75w-90 or if there is some other type of comparable product i can use.

 

Do not use just any plain old gear oil you find...

Hyundai M/T school sepically calls for GL4... most common you find are GL5, and GL5 has different additives, and is tackier/more clingie than GL4., and the GL5 will ruin the snchros in the M/T

Current Hyundai bottle of GL is 75/85, part number is 08950-00020, cost approx $16/qt..

Last dealer I worked had Penzoil in 5 gallon, for customer pay jobs, the Hyundai stuff was reserved for over counter sale and warranty.

 

put a synthetic in if you can get a good one, just make sure its GL-4 and not GL-5. as sbr711 stated, GL-5 will trash the transmission. sadly most guys at parts stores don't know that there is a difference between GL-4 and 5. they'll try and tell you its the same - it isn't.

i'm running amsoil full synthetic 75W-90 GL-4 and the difference is night and day. give it a shot if you can.

also a couple tips to make changing the oil easier:

- remove the filling plug first. why? if you can't get it off, would be a bit of a problem to pull the drain and not be able to refill the trans again.

- when filling grab some cheap tubing. i think 3/8" is the right size...instead of worrying how to get the oil into a horizontal hole with very little clearance around it, simply pour oil down the tube until it starts to flow out around the fill hole. a funnel will make pouring the oil a lot less messy as well.

- you're probably ok with an 07, but take a look at the fluid for the clutch. when it gets very dirty over time, that can cause seizing with the master and slave clutch cylinders. not much worse than having a clutch that you can't use. this would be a good time to flush it out, just remember to bleed it properly. process is exactly like brakes and the thing takes brake fluid even.

 

i actually ended up finding a 75w-90 gear oil that was rated G4, and im pretty sure the last part is what really matters. I would buy it from the dealership, but they wanted to charge me almost $22/ qt, and i need to completely change mine out so thats around 6qts= you do the math! So i found it for $14 a gallon at carquest!

 

You only need a little over 2qt I think it is for the Accent M/T drain and fill..

 

Better check your math (and the owners manual). The automatic takes 6+ quarts of ATF but the manual transmission takes exactly 2.0 quarts.
