Unhappy starter hits now

Help...I bought a 1997 Accent with starter problems, got it home to find out it has a 1995 Accent transmission in the 1997 Accent. When I turn the key, the starter squels, hits the flywheel/ torque converter....and starts, buts it sounds terrible, even with a new starter. Could the previous owner, who did the swap himself, but now is in jail on some other offense, have put it together wrong....I invite all knowledge please. thanks

In Hyundai, there's a difference between a starter for a manual transmission and and automatic transmission, I think the manual has a shorter nose, or the other way around.

Default man. vs auto

As per O'Reillys auto parts, the manual starter has no nose, and the auto has a nose, which my stater has, i wonder if there is a way to shim or align the two components better or OEM specs, as i don't know.....have a good day...thanks
