Default Transmission question...

I want to buy a 2000-2002 Hyundai Accent sedan. I was hoping to find a manual sedan, but it looks like I may be settling for an automatic.

I know about the Accent automatics...and there horror stories...

But what goes wrong with these? And after rebuilding them can I expect the issues to just repeat again or should I get some better life out of the tranny if I rebuild it?

I can rebuild it myself, I have done a transmission rebuild before...but I just don't want to do it if it is gonna fail again in 6 months...

There = location: That's my car over there.

They're = contraction of "they are": They're going to take me to the ball game. (They are going to take me to the ball game.)

Their = possessive pronoun. It always describes a noun: I know about the Accent automatics...and their horror stories...

Now that that's out of the way. What horror stories? My mother-in-law has a 2003 4-door Accent auto that she basically abuses and does little maintenance on. She's had zero problems with it.

That is odd...

Every person Ive spoken to about these cars has nothing but bad things to say about the transmissions not shifting and eventually needing a rebuild...

Of course I won't buy the car if its broken, but I am sure if I do buy a good working one, from the looks and sounds of things it won't be good for long....

I was reading on CarSurvey.com, as well as Hyundai-Forums.com and a lot of people are having transmission issues...

It is good to hear that someone is having no issues, but I am still wondering.

Keep clean clear fluid in it, and any problems be next to none...

Get the TCM updated with program #18 I think it is, this will practcally eliminate the 0722 output speed sensor code, update the PCM to program #52, this is the last available Update for all previous editions.

Would I just take that to the dealer to be done? And how much can I expect to pay, or should it be free?
