It could be any number of things. If the light is on then there is a problem with the system and the air bags will not work in the event of a crash. So it is very important to get it fixed right away.
One common thing that could cause the light is if the weight sensors in the seat become disconnected. Many times placing something under the front seats can cause the wires under the seat to become disconnected. I'd check under both front seats first for any loose or disconnected wires. If that isn't the problem you will need to take it to a mechanic to have it looked at.
