I have noticed a problem that occurs only after a long interstate speed trip of over an hour or so. After I leave the interstate and slow into street traffic, the first downshift produces a pronouncedjerk or "thunk" in the driveline. It will only do it once or twice and then it is OK.

I also still have "lifter noise" like rogerf. It is almost unnoticeable from inside the car, on the outside it sometimes sounds like an old sewing machine. It is a shame, otherwise the car is a dream.

 

Have you taken your car to the dealer for a synopsis as to what, and why it's doing that??

I will ask them to note it during my next oil change visit. Maybe there is a service bulletin. I don't expect them to drive it for 2 hours on the interstate. This one will be hard to diagnose unless it gets much worse.

 

Yeah most dealers will say they can't do anything until something actually breaks. But I would bring it to their attention anyway.

 

I have not noticed the transmission problem but the ticking noise from the engine has been there for over 9,000 miles. The next time I am near the dealer (its a 70 mile round trip from home) I am going to the Sales Manager so he can listen to the noise. I will explainto him how Toyota is building a new dealership 3 miles from my house and ask him if repeat customers are part of the sales forecast he gives to his boss. I will then see what influence he has over the shop. I may even ask for the regional Hyundai rep to intervene if I'm not satisfied. I may even have to look in to the Texas Lemon Law provisions about getting repairs taken care of. As of now I have made four specific trips to them, left the car for a total of 4 days, andits still not fixed because they could not "duplicate the problem" while in their care.

My 2006 Azera does the same thing after driving at highway speeds for a long time. It appears to occur going from 3rd to 4th after getting off the hwy and then slowing down or stopping. It's a one time deal, no problems after that one hard shift. Reported to dealer, no problem found. I'm sure whatever it is not good in the long term, but it is very hard to document given you have to drive the car for several hours.

 

I just returned from a 5000 mile trip to San Diego and back. The transmission never gave me any trouble or "thunks".

 

Yup.. I have the same problem with my '06. Slams into gear after getting off the interstate. It does happen only once but once should be enough. The dealer told me I have to make it fail for them..??? or there is nothing they can do.

And the issue with locking in fourth or fifth gear drives me nuts too. Why should I have to 'manually' shift this car? Oh yeah, they couldn't recreate that either.

I am talking to Hyundai and have a case open with them. I told them I want to escalate the case and they said that a supervisor will call me in the next 24 hours. Great customer service!!!!!!!! I'll let you know what they don't do.

I'd sell this thing but there is no resale on these cars.

 

It has happened to me once since my San diego trip. Last week after a 150 mile interstate trip. Not as bad as the first time it was happening over a year ago. I have no faith that the dealer can re-create it, and I don't want them driving my car 150 miles to test it.

Hyundai should have a few of their executives driving these cars, I would think. The only way this will get noticed is if they report it.

 

Does the Azera have one of those adaptive transmissions that is supposed to be learning your driving habits and then act accordingly during your driving process? If so, it could be learning some bad stuff on long, interstate type of driveing, and that is the cause of the hard shift each time as you all noted.
