Gas mileage is going from bad to worse in my new 2023 Elantra hybrid limited.
I bought the car in June and it was getting about 50 mpg for the first month or so. Slowly over the next few months it would slip from 50 down to 45 and naturally from 45 to where we are now. Exactly 6 months old it’s now averaging under 30 mpg. I wouldn’t have even considered buying this car if I thought it couldn’t come close to its recommended epa fuel of 49/51 mpg. What could cause this discrepancy and could weather really drop the mileage from 50 to under 30?
I’m just starting the process of notifying the dealer. It was bought brand new in June and I know that the weather is cold outside here in Chicago like 20 to 30 degrees but I just can’t imagine that it could affect gas mileage so much. Thanks for replying. I’ll contact the dealer.

yes I’m seeing that as well. Bought new in August and now seeing 39 mpg. Did you get any answers as to why?
I had the same problem with my Elantra purchased in May. It gave me very good gas mileage until I allowed a software update to be installed from the manufacturer. After that, mileage went to h#ll. I lost around 7-10 MPG using the same driving habits as before.
The dealers are no help when the problem is related to manufacturer updates. They told me to call Hyundai directly because there was no way for them to track those updates. Dealers can only track updates they install.
Hyundai places customer in a precarious position because dealers can't track all software update history for cars they sell. Calling Hyundai directly is a time consuming process that could be reduced if the dealers were able to track all updated for vehicles sold. Now, I have to do it the hard way. That's what I get for spending thousands of dollars on a mass manufactured product.
I totally understand the liability of allowing dealerships to roll back software updates, but have difficulty understanding Hyundai's choice to exclude them from software tracking. It would make their product more attractive if customers were able to report problems with software updates through the dealership.

I have the same issue and every time I take the car to go get service I complain but only one time they put it on the service sheet. They try to blame it on the weather and they try to blame it on my driving habits, but I drive the car smoothly as I can making sure that the EV is engaged. Not only is my mileage dropping, but also my range when I fill the car the only reason why I bought this car and not the performance model which I originally wanted because of the advertised mileage that it said I was supposed to get the car does good and city driving and on flat surfaces but when driving on the highway, the mileage is considerably worse. I had one person say it was a software issue as well to be honest I think Hyundai needs to address this as soon as possible, or I might have to file a law complaint, especially since I’m not the only one experiencing this issue.
This is possible grounds for a class action suit. Hyundai doesn't seem to be interested if their customers are having problems. My first mind was to take the car back to the dealership for a refund.
The posts about weather and whatnot aren't helpful because I noticed that even with the current temperature of 80 degrees, the gas mileage hasn't improved. What I also noticed that after that manufacturer update around August or September (don't know because Hyundai hasn't responded to me) the EV indicator would come on while the engine is running. The engine would run while I was stopped at a traffic light. It had never done this before the update.
It is not something a dealership can help with because Hyundai broadcasts the updates without dealer knowledge. That particular update changed the driving response of the car. I was getting around 60MPG before the update. Now I'm lucky if I get 55, but then other drivers will get upset because I'm driving so conservatively.
I was considering the Honda Sport before the purchase. It had comparable gas mileage and a small turbo engine for the same price. I want to get out of the rut I'm in, but I will have to do the leg work because Hyundai is obviously not serious about addressing this concern. The dar is overly aggressive with certain things like dimming the display when driving through an underpass. The sensor operates too soon. Hyundai could have waited 10 seconds or so before assuming nighttime came at the snap of a finger. There are other problems I am having that would improve the driveability of the car, but I don't expect Hyundai will do anything about them unless I raise a storm.
They did send me regular emails about their new line of vehicles less than a week after I made the purchase. You can see where their concern is. That was a clear sign that they had motivation.
I will be submitting a review on the BBB website. Out of 261 custoer reviews, their rating is 1.6 out of 5. I haven't gone through every review, but I see no responses from Hyundai. That is a clear sign too. Even some of the worst companies would at least respond to customers who had problems.

You can try to check your cars VIN in https://vinnumber.net/makes/hyundai/elantra/ if it has open NHTSA recall. Because it looks like factory defect.
