We bought a 2013 Elantra for my son with 90K. The car runs and seems great. I started reading more about it after the purchase (bad on me) but we got it very low cost. I now have read horror stories about engine failures. I also read 1 woman drove hers 1 million miles. I'm wondering how concerned I should be or what my odds are for a failure. I normally maintain my cars well and drive them over 200K.


I'm wondering if I should trade it in before the engine goes kaput. Or if I'll probably be okay. I'm wondering how many high mileage ones are here and what the odds are of having the engine knock and engine failure. I hope to keep it for 200K.

 

If it makes no unusual noise now and performs as it should keep it and maintain it with regular oil changes. In that case the odds are in your favor.

 

I also have a 2013 auto Elantra....& a 2016 manual Elantra, totaling 135,000+ miles & never have had a repair. Also, have a 2008 Accent with 148,000 miles & never any engine work needed. Numerous Elantra engines had shavings that damaged them. & some engines have "ticking & clicking" noises when idling. If your engine's construction didn't have shavings, the engines are long enduring. I do note at idle, that our 2016 engine is quieter than our 2013 engine. Believe the 2016 engine has a couple less HP, but gained more smoothness & response, compared to the 2013. Both engines function wonderfully & I expect both will go to 200,000+ miles, maybe even 300,000 miles. Both engines gain 8% better MPG, while burning 87 octane ethanol-free gasoline(E0), compared to 87 octane E10.

 

I just bought a 2012 with 130K for my son and am hoping the same. It runs well now. The "clicking and ticking" issue was the biggest concern I read about and that is caused by a design flaw that was applied to the Elantras manufactured in the Alabama plant. Check your VIN and if it starts with K and not a number you are supposedly good from that one.

 

I akso bought this model for my son with 102k on it. The vin starts with the letter k. Came across some posts about engine issues with this year and model. Car runs well, however the engine sounds a little louder when started and quieter after it warms up. Is this normal? That is my biggest concern.
