Default What's up with my Oil Light?

Was driving home one day and the Oil Light came on so I pulled over and checked the oil and it was full. I didn't hear or see anything wrong like oil dripping under the car and my garage floor is spotless but the Oil Light continues to come on. The past three days it will go on and off all day long so I took it to the dealer and they said it had too much oil in it.

I use to work as a mechanic and I know how to check oil but I told him well if it has too much oil in it then it's the guy who does oil changes in their shop who put too much in it because I have them do the oil changes.

I left it with them and they changed the oil for free and the next day the light started coming on again. It's not showing the Check Engine Light just the Oil light so I asked if it could be a sensor and he said it would show up on the computer and I told him that if the CEL isn't coming on there's no way for it to store a code and he agreed. I asked him what does he plan to do and he said I'll talk to the guy who worked on your car and call you back.

NO call back.

Am I right or wrong here?

Could it be something else causing it?

When the oil light comes on, isn't for oil pressure and not oil level???
A semi-clogged passage??
Or frayed wiring?

I'm thinking oil level because if it was oil pressure you should hear lifters or engine noise of some kind. Wouldn't the CEL come on if it was oil pressure issues?
IDK Never owned a Hyundai. Always Dodge pick ups. Then I retired and needed something with better MPGs and no payments.

Hi throwinrocks,

If it was anyone else I would be maybe a little more polite, but since you are one of us, I gotta ask ya, didn't you always check an oil pressure problem with a real gauge?
Maybe, it is like a doctor is not supposed to treat his/her own family. I know you would do this if it was somebody else's car, right?

What if you confirmed the oil pressure was up to specs? At least you wouldn't be worrying about engine failure if all was well there. Soo, maybe avisitor was right and it could be a defective sending unit or wiring problem, what do you think ?
Hope you don't get annoyed with the suggestions, just trying to remind you , especially at these times when we all have a lot on our mind. Have a nice cup of coffee and maybe plan your moves, and if the spirit so moves you ,lol, let us know what you find, thanks.

Well if my health was better I'd take the time to to attempt to try and find said oil sensor or wire problem but I'm unable to do so. I don't even know where to look on these cars so I had them pick the car up using a tow service and take it to the dealer. It's under warranty and that's also a good reason to not work on it. Say I found the problem and tried to fix it but made it worse. Would that void the warranty? Just saying.

Had no idea your vehicle was still under warranty.
A lot of places will void the warranty if anyone else got in there and created addl problems.
Believe you made the right decision by having the dealer handle it.
Was not aware of your situation and that should teach me to not assume anything , sorry about that.
If you would, could you update us on what they did to correct the problem,, thanks.

No worries. You didn't say anything I would not have said. lol
I'm restricted on work due to my heart but I manage some how to get the lawn mowed. use to take 1.5 hours now it's 3.

Seriously I was thinking just a bad sensor because you could turn a corner it would go off or it might come on while idling but once you take off it would go off. Some times it would come on while driving down the highway but just a few seconds. could be the oil pump but I'lI let them do the hard work. I started to think back in the old days those old cars we had where the gas gauge needle would move when turning corners or sitting on uneven ground. lol

Appreciate the response though. A lot of these Hyundai sites aren't very active

This one is pretty active. There is plenty to learn here. Some folks on this forum that have been on here for a few years and we shared a lot of fixes. Always glad to have more participate and as a former mechanic , I'm sure you could help out here, what do you think?

Was the issue resolved with the oil light? How was it fixed? I'm wondering because my 2017 Elantra is doing the exact same thing 😕
Thanks

As you have noticed , a lot of folks do not get back to us to let us know what caused the problem or the repair that corrected the problem.

Don't know how much you want to get into this problem, but it could be something simple .If you are planning to do all the work yourself we can provide some guidance otherwise have a shop look at it.
