Unhappy Elantra Non-Touring so far...

So it has been almost a month since I purchased my Elantra Touring (picked up the keys on May 1st), and yesterday as I left work for lunch I come to discover my EPS light on. shortly there after noticed my Tach had malfunctioned and thereby the car wasn't shifting properly. Needless to say with only 1377 km on the car total, the local Hyundai dealership from which I purchased the car had requested I get the car towed up to their service center.

That was yesterday around 3pm, I hadn't heard anything from them until I called this afternoon in which the service rep I was talking to said the car was being worked on, and they had so far had 3 hours of work put into troubleshooting the car answer as to what caused the problem or what the problem actually is.

Honestly I love this car so far the ride is great, the handling is great audio is great... barely broke in so not going discuss power as I havn't even tested the car to determine this. I was just wondering basically I guess if anyone else has had any similar issues with their new Touring as of yet?

Recap of issues,
EPS indiciator illuminated = Electronic Power Steering problem.
Stiff Steering (due to power steering issue...)
Check Engine illuminated = obviously an error, maybe caused with EPS
Tach non functional = no display of RPM
Automatic Transmission not shifting = related to tach non functional?

personally I am thinking something computer related... Opinions?

It's either the computer, a speed sensor (there's plenty of them), or a connection. The mechanic has his work cut out.

I agree. Probably just sensors. Sorry to hear you are having problems with the new car but sometimes that's to be expected on the first year of a totally new car. I'm sure the dealership will correct the problems.

Cool

I am on the same page as you with an electrical/computer problem. And I do expect some issues knowing this is the first year for the model, as far as I know anyhow. I just would have loved to have gotten a little more driving before the first issue happened BUT I LOVE THIS CAR

Thanks for your input folks, now I only wonder if any of the other Touring drivers have had any similar situations?

Question Wow!

Sorry to hear of your problem. I'm at about 600 miles on mine so far, and the only problem is an intermittent radio when the car is hot inside. Please let us know what the problem was after they've fixed it, we may need to know too.

I agree, it's a great little car. I've been driving nothing but SUV's and full-size pickups since 1987, and I'm impressed with my Touring. It handles like a go kart, is comfortable, and has way more features than most vehicles I've had. I still have a Titan to do my towing chores, and for trips up the mountains, but the Touring gets the nod for everything else. I plan to take it waaaay across country next fall. Hopefully any other bugs will show by then.

Good luck!

It's normal for a new model car like that to have some bugs. Usually I look for a later year car, that way I figure the factory has it's production line smooth and matured.

The final year of a production line are usually a disaster too, since now the factory is trying to convert "seamlessly" to the new car, while maintaining output of the old car. Sometimes they introduce new production techniques and systems on the old car.
