Oil Filter Cup

I'm amazed that it is so hard to find, but can someone tell me what size of oil filter wrench cup fits the ET, and where to get one? None of the national chains carry the right size, and my Hyundai dealer would not offer up that information. I just cannot believe that it has been this difficult to find the right tool. Can anyone help?

This is not exactly what you are asking about, but this wrench:

http://www.amazon.com/Import-Car-Oil...636924&sr=8-29

is one I use for stubborn oil filters. Has a rack and pinion mechanism that squeezes the filter housing as you turn. The more resistance by the filter, the tighter the wrench grabs. The Lisle brand is carried by many auto parts stores. There are other brands that make a similar product. I have never seen a cap style wrench with the correct number of flats to match a Hyundai spin-on, but this is not a style that I use or look for.

If this is the original factory filter on the car, I wish you luck. Hyundai has it down to a science on how tight a canister filter can be screwed on just short of stripping the threads. Some folks have the first oil change done by the dealer just so they don't have to confront this issue.

Thanks Ken. I think I'm reading your comment in that you are saying the factory puts the filter on too tight, correct? It took a lot of muscle power to get it off, that's for sure. My Dollar Store adjustable filter strap did the job however. Given that mechanics tell you to only hand tighten the filter, the OEM Hyundai ET filter was put on with an air gun it was so tight. I hand tightened the new one, but also gave it a 1/4 turn with the strap wrench. The only reason I am still looking for the filter wrench (and thanks very much for the website) is that "how long can a Dollar Store strap last?"
Also of interest, the Hyundai service department almost mandated that I buy their $1 oil plug washer. I think they already have them taped to the top of the box, and to resist buying it, would "upset their streamlined operations." I told her that I have NEVER replaced the washer on my other cars and never lost a drop of oil. When she continued to argue with me, I spent the $1. Now after I removed the plug, the washer would not come off the end of the plug, so I left it on; guess what?.....as with my 1,000 other oil changes on vehicles, the old washer did not leak nor cause galaxies to explode.

Yes. I'm not sure how or why the factory does this. The filters certainly are not going to shake loose during shipment of the cars. Damn near gave me a hernia to get the first filter off my daughter's 09 Sonata.

I simply hand tighten all spin-on filter, but usually grip them with a terry cloth towel for a better grip.

These are plain aluminum crush washers, nothing magical about them. Replacing them is a good idea, but you can reuse them once, maybe twice before they get squashed too much. You don't have to buy them from Hyundai. You can buy them from any auto part store in packets for far less. Why the washer is not included with the OEM spin-on filter kits is a mystery. Hyundai does provide the washer in the cartridge filter kits.
