Default Speed of best MPG

Has anyone determined at what speed you get the best MPG on the touring?

My only issue with the ET automatic is that it is a 4 speed. Had Hyundai put the extra gear in, the automatics would get a few more mpgs.

Yes mine has an automatic & with the gearing set as it is they are very close & low!
so at 50 mph or RPM is 2100, & at 65mph the RPM is about 2500 to 2600.
Needs an 5th gear -overdrive.

First, 4th gear in the Touring automatic is already overdrive:
1st = 2.919
2nd = 1.551
3rd = 1.000
4th = 0.713
Reverse = 2.480
Final gear ratio = 4.121

Second, the number of gears doesn't matter. It's the ratios that do. And the Touring automatic actually has a BETTER top gear ratio than the 5-speed manual:
1st = 3.308
2nd = 1.962
3rd = 1.257
4th = 0.976
5th = 0.778
Reverse = 3.583
Final gear ratio = 4.188

Higher RPM's are not the problem. Modern 4-cylinders don't make a lot of torque at low RPM's and need to spin higher to make power. Lugging them too low does not save fuel, it uses more because it's working harder.

I read somewhere a long time ago that modern engines are most efficient at 45 of so. The only reason why the most efficient speed is not infinity is wind resistance of course; if it didn't exist you would continue to accelerate and use longer and longer gear ratios. But wind resistance does exist and the force generated by it is related to the third power of velocity, so it gets more and more severe at higher speeds. The 40s is where the advantage of a higher gear ratio balances the disadvantage of wind resistance.

That applies to all cars in general. Where actual gearings are will influence the answer for a particular car. It would seem to make sense to drive the car at the lowest rpms in the highest gear, which is around 45-50 for the Touring too.

There are a few more on the web! & Yes you can find allot wrong with this car (ET) . the list is getting longer with age.
I bought the ET gls becouse of all it had to offer as standard ! then after a 300 mile tirp we had to Buy towels to cover up from the heat, That with the gas mileage,26hwy or 27 tops, about 23 all around driving.
So as I see it the gas miles Suck, The ET GLS needs allot of things fixed ! some can't be. Like my Honda Fit -Great MPG, 40+ But you pay for it in the Bad ride and the 5 speed autotmatic shifting at every little up grade in the road, even with that it got 32-34 all around, it had 15" wheels as the ET has 16"! So in the real World = The ET is what it is, I have looked very much at all the cars in my price range & sometimes
that does not get the best car or Quilty!
In my case I looked for Ride, MPG, options standard,& room inside, Price & tradein,
The ET fit us just fine at first 200 miles or so. Anyway if I had a extra $2000. I could fix most of the problems! may be off a little here but not far= 17" Wheels& tires $950.00,+$675.99 in Windshild,seat covers $130.00,. But that is only $1756.00 or so.
At 13,085 out the door or about, & for what you get is not bad!

As my Wife said just Smile everyday you awake up & wear Sunblock!!

Default gas versus speed

I bought my 2010 ET SE 4spd auto in March 2010, trading in a 2008 Scion XD. I had 14 things I didn't like about my Scion.

There are two things I don't like about the ET; horn could be louder and the side cup holders wider. Sigh!

I have only had a few small issues which the dealer here in Chico, CA promptly took care of; door latch "chrome" peeling and the driver side weatherstripping was getting "old" looking (sun here is HOT.) Both replaced in warranty at no charge.

I've experimented with gas milage at different speeds and using California "gas" and real gas (anywhere that is not California).

California fuel Nevada/Oegon/Idaho Fuel
65-70 31mpg 33-34mpg
72 33 36!
82 29-30 34!
50 42 46
45 47 49!

MPG calculated going on level or about 30 minutes minimum.

Outside of a few cheap made plastic items, I really love this car and wish they had kept this model but put in a different engine and transmission. Will not consider the GT. Too small.

55mph or 88kph is a general optimum fuel efficiency for any vehicle.

That's just not true. There are too many variables to make a blanket statement like that. Variables like frontal area, coefficient of drag, transmission gearing, etc.

Default Well all I'll say is 25mpg all round

we have 8790 miles on the 2010 touring ! manly becouse of the front.
windsheild with on tint to help from sun burn!
We have a life time free? oil change at the dealer, So took it in last week july of this year, & as always the dealer wants us to trade up to the (new) 2012 touring gls! I looked at it and then told him ,after 2years -
& still NO TINT!!! All the others have it? . & you want to put me in a nother oven ! I told him -With what the book listing we have took a betting , even at 8790 some miles = just to put us in a Elantra $17988.00 ,we would have to put $5700 down! Or just stay with the ET.
25mpg all around is not that bad!
