Default 2007 AWD SF Needs New Pads at 36K!!!

My GF drives her SF *very* gently. She was in for an inspection at the dealer and was told she would not pass unless she had her pads replaced. These were the *rear* pads. She was shocked as I am. The dealer said this is not
uncommon.
I drive a Murano that had passed 60K and had a recent inspection and everything was fine. What gives with the Santa Fe? And of course I suppose she can look forward to this every 30K from now on.
Help much appreciated!
Thanks.
Frank

So, did you look at it yourself and verify the problem? Go out and buy some ceramic pads and put them in yourself, you're GF will love you for it.

I did not see the pads as I was not with her. She is from RI where inspections are every 2 years and it seems he thought she did not have enough thickness to go 2 years.
She was offered the ceramic pads but thought they were too expensive. She was sort of trapped as she had never imagined she would have to have any pads changed at 36K. Too bad it was at a dealer of all places.
As for ceramics, years ago I had trouble with squealing. Is that still an issue?
But my most important question is still: Is it uncommon for the rear pads to need replacing on a gently driven AWD after only 36K? What number of miles is most common?

Probably the dealer sees an opportunity to make some money, whereas a third party shop might pass them. They're probably close to needing replacement, as others have complained about rear pads wearing out too soon. Probably the OEM pads are pure organic pads and wear out faster. Ceramic is fine, any pad will squeal if you don't use some silicone behind them.

I saw this on a few other posts on the net. The caliper and/or brake pad combo does not fit correctly on the rotor. It has been stated that some of these need to be "forced" into position. You need to check the rotors for gouges etc...the brakes are ceasing up and wearing out quickly. Take notice of "hot" smells after driving. I personally haven't experienced this, but there are some posts around the web.

Unfortunatley the 06 and 07 sonatas and 07 santa fes, as well as a few azeras have a problem with the pads getting stuck in the carrier. If you performed a 15k service on the vehicle (which is a front and rear brake service) it should have been ok. If you didnt then im surprised you made it to 36k. Ive seen sonata need rears at 17k and some santa fes at 25k.

The pads fit too tightly from the factory in the carrier and when too much debris builds up around the pad they get stuck and constantly apply pressure to the rotor causing it to wear prematurley.

Do NOT put anything but Hyundai Pads on the truck otherwise it will squeak and squeal louder than a mouse in a mouse trap. There is nothing wrong with the pads. As long as the person performing the brake job properly cleans and lubricates the slides and contact points, it wont happen that early again.

So it's probably going to happen early again?

Joking aside, great info in this thread.
