Confusing Transmission Dipstick Readings...
 

2004 Santa Fe GLS with 3.5 Liter V6 and 111,000 miles.
I bought it earlier this year, and it's been a great little vehicle.
When I check the trans fluid level, it reads WAY over full.
So I decided to go ahead and drain the fluid and change it out.
I expected to drain an excess amount, but only got 4 quarts.
I put only three quarts of new fluid back in and it's running fine.
But when I check it, it's reading way up on the dipstick again!
How the heck can that be..?!? Any suggestions for me?

Are you reading the transmission dipstick on level ground when the engine is running and the gear selector is in neutral?

If you are then you should know that the transmission is running fluid through
It won't show you the true level of fluid like that

Check your manual for the fluid capacity of the transmission

I'm checking it on level surface, warmed-up, engine idling in park.
That is how I have always checked automatic transmissions.
I'm pretty sure it needs to be running to show the proper level.
I just can't figure out why the stick gets so covered with fluid...

I have tried inserting the dipstick in at all different orientations.
(always thoroughly cleaning it in between each time, of course).
One side is always completely covered (like about 5" or 6" up).
The other side is not covered, but it does get spattered with fluid.
The spatters and streaks are enough to prevent a meaningful reading.

Well, what is the lowest place that doesn't get splattered? .. is your fluid level??

Yeah, I understand what you're saying.
But there is really no definitive line of fluid visible.
Even on that dry side it's still streaked and smeared.

I went ahead and put in the fourth quart of SPIII.
So at least I know it has the same amount as before.
And for sure it is much cleaner and refreshed now.
But I just wish I was able to know the exact level...
