How often does the turbo really kick in?

Default How often does the turbo really kick in?

I just got a 2.0 T Santa Fe AWD and love it. I wonder though just how often the turbo kicks in.

I can get 26 mpg in town just by being careful not to tromp the throttle. On the road I am getting a fantastic 32 mpg at 70 mph.

I have gotten into the turbo a couple of times just to see what happens, and it does respond really well, but maybe not quite as much as my '07 Santa Fe with the 3.3 engine. A side by side drag race would be interesting, and I may get my wish because I gave the car to my daughter who lives in the country and needs AWD.

I don't hear the turbo engage, which is probably what Hyundai wanted, but was curious just how often it actually goes to turbo. Like is it in turbo only when really pressing the throttle or does it kick at a constant speed like 75 mph?

Never had a turbo before, so there are lots of questions.

Thanks,

Daniel

The turbo is always spinning. If the engine is running, the turbo is spinning. Exhaust gasses spin the turbo. Now, at lower engine RPM's, the turbo isn't spinning that quickly so it's not creating much boost. The faster the engine spins, the faster the turbo spins and the more boost is created.

Thanks. I actually got online and looked it up. I guess I could have done that first.
