Oil burning- 2017 Santa Fe 2.0T
 

I have a 2017 Santa Fe 2.0T Sport Ultimate. I am here at the dealership now (99858 miles) and asked them to check on excessive oil burning. There are no leaks, no tail pipe smoke. 100% synthetic from the start. Oil-filter changes on a 5000 mile schedule (95% highway). The adviser says that is normal and they see it frequently. There is no remedy from Hyundai. This is just crazy. Burning a quart every 1250 miles!! My 2011 Sonata 2.5T did not have this issue. I know, different engine. My faith in the Hyundai engine is ruined now.

Does any else see this and what solutions has anyone found?

Pretty sure if you are the original owner, you might be covered by the 100,000 mile warranty.
Suggest you check what your owner's manual and warranty coverage might say., good thing you filed this complaint before the 100,000 mile warranty went away.

If you know your rights , it is harder for the dealership to just ignore your complaint.

I have a 2017 Santa Fe Sport with 2.4 liter engine and 44,000 miles on it and, it also burns oil. I have to add a quart of oil every 2500 miles! Always used synthetic 5-20. I am the second owner and purchased it with only 5,500 miles on it.

If you lived in the Artic circle, I could see using that light an oil, but NOT in Florida.

Pretty sure your owner's manual specifies a heavier weight oil for temps that never go below freezing. Check that out.

If you cannot find any recommendation, I would consider using something like 10W30.

Well, I did just check again and, that what is written on the oil cap and again written in the owners manual. I even went to the Castrol oil page site and 5w-20 is the suggested oil for my vehicle. Pennzoil site tells me 5w-30. Car runs perfect otherwise. But... I am now thinking on moving towards the 10w-30 weight as told by you and other sites. Not quite close to Artic circle but more close to south Georgia.. LOL ! Chalking it up to the GDi type motor.

You are closer to the right thing than you think.

What is CRITICAL with newer engines is REGULAR oil changes with a QUALITY motor oil.

GDI engines operate with some extreme pressures on certain moving parts and clean, good quality motor oil is definitely required.

Found this on you tube about oils, good old Scotty Kilmer without the hand waving! It is informative. Thank you for your input, this oil use issue just started happening at about 28000.

We can appreciate when a tech tells it like it is.

Like Scotty because he does just that.

Update. 6,000 miles later I suddenly lost engine power on the Interstate. Engine shaking began to get bad. 5 miles later I was home. The next day I took it to my most respected and superb mechanic. He suspected one thing but in time he found the compression in cylinder #4 was only 20 pounds! Later I limped it to the dealer. I did call Hyundai customer assistance and had them make a formal complaint file. Eventually (4 weeks later with NO communication from the dealer) I discovered from an employee who poked around, that a NEW ENGINE is needed.
I did leave detailed phone messages and days later they have yet to call back. When I dropped it off on day one, I told them the history and expected warranty to take care of the issue (whatever it is).
When I hear more, I'll update you here. This is meant to be an FYI to others with this vehicle/engine combo.

It is no secret, dealerships are overloaded with work , AND the customer WAITS and WAITS.
As long as the customer is not constantly calling to find what it is being done, he/she will continue to WAIT.

Constant calling for that info , usually will get some results. It can be done politely, but with persistence.
