Default Rack & Pinion/Steering issue

Hey Guys, wondered if I could get some advice on an issue I'm having:

I have a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe . 180K. Timing belt and transmission are good.... think I can get a couple more years out of it!

Unfortunately, the power steering went on it. I took it into my 'back street mechanic' , he usually does a good job. - He replaced the steering pump. The car drove OK for about 45mins before grinding sounds were apparent. I looked and the reservoir was overflowing fluid. *At this point power steering has gone completely

Took the car back to the mechanic... he says the Rack and Pinion need rebuilding.

I've heard this is a tricky job. Should I trust my guy to fix it.... or would you suggest taking it elsewhere (specialist)? If so, any suggestions in NYC area?

Any ideas on an estimated cost for this job?

Many thanks in advance! - Tom.

It may be cheaper to buy a complete rack rebuilt by Hyundai. If you can tell me your VIN number or engine size I can find the correct one for you and get a price.
