Starter turns over slowly
Sonata 2004 2.4L 4cyl. 70K miles. The starter turns over slowly for about 1 revolution and the car starts. It really sounds like it is struggling hard. The starter is a planetary gear reduction type and I would think it would turn over fast! (similar to my Toyota) I bought the car used at 20k miles and it has always been thus, even when a new battery was installed. Is this a Hyundai thing?
I pulled the injector fuse so it would not start and I could check the battery cables and battery for voltage drop. I also found that after the first revolution the starter would spin much faster at what I would consider an expected speed. Also while cranking the battery voltage dropped down to 11.8 from a standing 12.8. The cables had voltage drops of 0.9 and 1.1 on the Pos and Neg cables from center of the battery posts to the starter.
QUESTION: Is this normal for these engines?
