I have an '02 Santa Fe, but I think it's all the same. I was surprised how easy it was. A friend of mine showed me. I went to the local auto parts store (Autozone) and for half the price of the dealership's price, I bought them and installed them in about a minute. Get a friend or something to hold up one side while you're replacing the other. Just pop the bottom off (it's like a little ball joint) and then unbolt and replace. They're supposedly all that simple.

this is what i ordered

Universal Monroe Lift Support Hatch, OE replacement

but im noticing the rear hatch is both knobby looking ends and the monroe has one flattened end with a hole and the knobby end on the other... guess im gonna have to call and talk to someone there to make sure im ordering the right part...

It looks like you ordered a universal strut. I got the exact replacement for my 02 Santa Fe and it was a perfect fit. For me, the ball is on the bottom, and it has 2 bolts at the top. All I had to do was smack the ball end with my hand and unbolt it from the top. I put the job off for 6 months, thinking it would be hard and expensive. I was wrong on both counts.

quick update

took it to Hyundai yesterday... replaced both lift supports.. replaced the weatherstripping as they said it shredded itself... gave me a free oil change, washed the car and put dressing on the tires.... I dont know what happened between last time i was there and yesterday but they definitely made a 180 in customer service!!!!!!!
