09 Sonata 2.4L
I am thinking about replacing my 06 Sonata with an 09 with the new ThetaII 4 cylinder. My question is this. Does the "new" 4 use a timing belt or chain? I can't seem to find reliable information elsewhere, so I am turnig to the experts here. Thanks.
Yes, the Theta used a chain. While a chain will last longer than the belt, chains don't last forever either. They can stretch over time as any fan ofChevy, Ford and MOPAR V8 engines know.
Heres a question then: If the timing belt/chain breaks, does it essentially destroy parts of the engine? Is it a non-interference (i think thats the right term...) or not???...I know my90 miata is non-interference. Btw, I have just bought an 09 sonata.
Yes, it is an interference engine and if it breaks when running, it will cause engine damage. However, you don't have to worry about it with the Theta 4-cyl. The chain will last much longer than a belt. Belts should be replaced every 60k miles. A chain willoutlast a belt many times over.
All the NF Sonatas both 4 and 6 cylinder use a timing chain. They should go 200-300k miles without any problem. By the time it breaks and you need a new engine the whole car will be ready for the junkyard. The timing belts were every 60k and if you didn't change them and broke a belt, you were screwed. I partially decided to trade my last car, an 01 Elantra 5 speed in because I was at 60k and didn't want to sink $400-500 into getting the belt done. I'm glad with the Sonata I do not have to worry about it.
