You are not wrong about your 2001 Sonata having a timing belt that pereiodically needs to be serviced. The 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine in your 2001 Sonata is not the same 2.4 liter engine found in the latest generation of the car. I beleive your engine was called the "Sirius", which is a cast iron/aluminum block design that does employ a timing belt that does need to be replaced every 60,000 miles. I beleive the Sirius was the ultimate and last design of this type of engine they had use for 20+ years.

With the 2006 Sonata, Hyundai switch to a newer, more modern design 2.4 liter engine. The engine in the 2009 Sonota is called the "Theta II", an aluminum block and head design that uses a silent timing chain system developed by BorgWarner. The chain system is designed to last the life of the engine.
