2000 GLS hard to start after gas fill up
Hey guys, My sister has a automatic 2000 Hyundai Sonata GLS, and for the past 2-3 months every time she fills it up with gas, it will turn over for about 10-15 seconds before starting, and then when it starts it will sputter out and die unless the throttle is being pressed. But other than that it starts and runs fine every other day. any ideas? thanks for the input!

One possible cause for this condition may be a mechanically stuck open canister purge valve (P/N 39460-38650). SERVICE PROCEDURE: If one of the above conditions exists, inspect the canister purge valve and intake system for vacuum leaks. Remove the canister purge valve (see photo below) and blow through the valve. No air should pass through the valve when it is removed from the vehicle. The canister purge valve is located near the right side and below the intake surge tank. http://www.hmaservice.com/files/331/...2/0020003a.jpg |
just a swap in? also where would i find the part? just a napa or would it have to be a Hyundai dealership
would it be this NAPA AUTO PARTS) or this KIA, HYUNDAI VALVE, PURGE CONTROL SOLENOID P/N 3946038650
I would get one from a dealer or an online source of Hyundai parts like:
Hyundai Shop | Hyundai Aftermarket | Hyundai Accessories | Hyundai Parts | Hyundai Dealer Accessories or Hyundai Parts Online Parts & Accessories Catalog |
ok thanks, so is it a quick swap in swap out?

I'm having a little trouble finding the part. some say $20, while others are telling me its for a santafe, and some are telling me its $60.
That's why I'd just go to a dealer and have them look up the correct part for your car/engine combination.
ok thank you!
hey again, sorry to bring this thread back, but i have the part and have to install it, but I'm not entirely sure where the part is located... any help would be appreciated

actually i have an album on here now does it look correct? https://www.hyundaiforum.com/forum/m...rge-valve-337/
Hard to say. That looks correct but I can't say it is for sure just based on those pics. Does it match the one you purchased?
no it looks a lot more circular than the one i purchased, and it has 1 hose coming out the bottom and then 1 on the top next to an electrical connector, the one i bought looks like the pic you showed me
and one of the hoses leads to the throttle body
It's supposed to be at the end of the intake, close to the passenger side strut tower. Your pictures look like it's behind the intake between the intake and firewall.
Were is the canister purge valve on 00 sonata cause that pix looks a lil like my car but obvious deferences and would you know were the vapor vent valve is
Is this part compatible with the 2000 Sonata 2.5 GLS?
Thanks Scott. |

Nova, I didn't mean to upset anyone with my posts, I'm just trying to find out the problem with my car. When I first read the post I saw someone mentioned the Accent. So that's why I asked a second time.
I do have another question. Is the Purge Control solenoid valve the same as the Purge Control Valve? I replaced the PCV (located right behind the intake manifold bolted to the throttle cable bracket) I cannot find what is pictured in the above posts anywhere on my car. Does the 2000 GLS have both? Thanks again. |
Hi guys!
Is anybody still here? I had the same problem with starting after gas filling with my Sonata 02 V6. I found the solution at the purge control valve and did the change. I worked but then issue came back. The first change gave me 3 months symptom-free, the second just one and a half! I'm wondering if it is the real/primary issue or it is result of other issue? Do you guys have any idea about this? |
