Default Fuel Tank Air Filter

Just picked up used 07 Sonata GLS 2.4. In process of replacing filters and basic maintenance. Manual refers to "fuel tank air filter" replacement at 30K. What is it? Can I replace myself?

Yeah, that's really interesting. I downloaded the owner's manual and carefully searched it with Adobe and only came up with the one reference under basic maintenance.

I'm willing to bet it refers to the little filter that's embedded in the evaporative canister system. On 2007 they have an upgraded evap system, much better than earlier ones. The filter just filters the air that's intaked into the system doesn't clog the canister control valve or the purge valve.

I wouldn't worry about it until you start having a problem with the evap system. The trick there is to not overfill the gas tank and screw up the evap system. Just fill it until the pump nozzle shuts off, no more.

#8 on the diagram below:

>SONATA(NF) > 2009 > Engine > Engine Control > Emission Control System > Evaporative Emission Control System > Fuel Tank Air Filter > Repair procedures > Replacement

1. Remove the rear left wheel house.

2. Disconnect the canister close valve wiring connector (A) and the vapor hose (B) disconnected to canister.

3. Remove the fuel tank air filter (C).

4. Install a new fuel tank air filter. Reinstall in reverse order.

Removing the wheel house sounds like the most time consuming part of this maintenance work. Wow...just to change a filter! Guess I'll let this one go to 60K before addressing. Thanks.
