Hyundai Sonata reliability
Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly.
With the Sonata, we've had excellent participation by owners of the 2007 and especially the 2006. Very much need more participants for other years. I'd especially like to provide quick results on the 2009. Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter. 2006: 80, about average 2007: 69, about average 2008: 67, about average, small sample size 2009: 14, better than average We've also introduced two new statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop. The percentage with no repairs is about 51 for the 2006 and 59 for the 2007, while the percentage of lemons is about 3 for the 2006 and 4 for the 2007 (i.e. virtually the same for both years). Not yet. Probably because it was a short model year--the 2011s were an early intro--we're still two cars short of the minimum needed to include the 2010 in the survey.
We do have solid information on the 2009, which should be similar. |

Starting this month we have a new question to measure, as objectively as possible, the severity of a problem. Many people have been asking for reliability stats that weight problems by how severe they are, and once we have enough responses with the revised survey we'll start providing this. The resource I use is CarComplaints.com | Car Problems, Car Complaints, & Repair/Recall Information
I owned an 09 sonata, and loved it. I only had the TPS go out on it once, and the dealership fixed it for free (even out of warrantee at the time). |
Carcomplaints is a good source for some information, but they can't provide reliability stats, which is what we focus on.
