You're much better off with the four cylinder rather than the six. Six had a problem with the timing chain tensioner that requires removing the whole engine to replace. Not to mention the four is much easier to work on and gets better MPG. Keep the trans fluid changed on time. Rear brakes had a problem with corrosion that might lead to pads getting hung up, but keeping the slides lubed and clean is all you need to do.

First, the engine does not have to be removed to replace the tensioner. Second, the tensioner replacement is a recall so it would be done for free by the dealer. Third, most used Sonatas have probably already had this recall done.

That's partially true. It still requires a engine hoist, and lifting and tilting the engine. Of course the point is moot, as he's looking at a four cylinder. I mention it because he needs to know the six cylinder is a PITA to work on. Also, it wasn't a recall, but it is covered under warranty.
