Unhappy Overheating 06 sonata

We have an 06 Sonata with 99,975 mile on it. (Yes, we drive a lot). Lately, if you idle too long or turn on the AC, the temp will shoot up. We've tried it in our drive way and the cooling fan will kick on for a few minutes, then go off before the temp goes down. The antifreeze is full, the fuses are good. We've had a really wet winter and our lane has been muddy. We have actually bottomed out on it. Is there a sensor that could be bad? We have not changed the thermostat yet. The upper rad hose is hard, like the water is not flowing. Should we start with changing the thermostat and fluid first? What if that doesn't work?
Thanks, djsgeym

I would change the thermostat first. If you haven't changed your timing belt yet, have it done and also change your water pump while you're there. I know it's a big ticket item

"Is there a sensor that could be bad?" I'd look at the one that controls the fan. Go to a big parts store and explain the problem and find out how much for a new sensor and replace it yourself. I know Advance Auto Parts will pull the trouble codes and maybe one is stored telling yo which sensor is bad, or pointing you in the right direction anyway.

Thermostat - They're not that expensive and certainly worth a try replacing it.
You mentioned mud & dirt. Are the fins in the radiator free to breathe? Easy to ascertain, at night take a flashlight and hold behind the radiator and move it around and see if lots of light comes through. For the heck of it, take it to one of those car washes with the wand, let the engine cool down and wash the radiator but don't hole the wand to close.

I don't think you have a big problem YET and should be an easy fix.

HOWEVER, if it continues to overheat sooner or later some serious, expensive fix damage will be done. If you can't find the cure pronto then pay the money and have it fixed by a Hyundai dealer. Oveerheating causes cracked heads and blown head gaskets which are expensive fixes so get the cure before that happens.
