The "J" refers to the shape or contour of the rim where the tire bead seats against it. I think the "J" rim is pretty much universally used on passenger cars these days. Here is a primer on tire/wheel specifications: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html

2. Note on TPMS Sensors:

I do not have them on my car.
So I guess I will be saving a bit of money there...
I am in Canada, the stock model does not come with TPMS.
Then you can ignore my comments about TPMS. Good safety idea, but a real pain for anyone who needs to swap tire sets during the year as the system is currently implemented.

3. Will the tire pressure remain the same? i.e. 32 PSI
Yes.

Good luck,
Ken

Ken99,

Thank you once again for the reply.
Your help was much appreciated as I was able to find a set of rims that I like.

I have just replaced my 2009 sonata with a 2012 model. As many have noted the road noise is terrible. Can I change the low profile 17" wheels with 16" wheels from a GLS model? I was aware that the car had this issue before I bought it but since I liked the SI I bought it with changing the tires in mind. Will changing to smaller wheels make a great difference ?
Also I'm willing to swap the 17" wheels for a set of the smaller ones. I have almost new tires on them if anyone is interested.

The problem isn't the wheel size, it's the tires. The 18" wheels and tires on my Tucson are silent but the 16" wheels and winter tires roar like crazy. It's loud when I first change over but after a week or two, I don't notice them anymore.

So, bottom line, if noise is the issue, change tires, not wheels.

Hi. Thanks for your coments. My Sonata SI has 18" yokohama AVD invigors on it. They have done about 3000 miles and we're on the car when I bought i. I've only had the car a couple of months so I can't compare the road noise to any other tires. I was under the impression that this make of tire reduced road noise. To be honest the noise above 60mph is overwhelming. I'd be interested to hear if any other make of tire would help.
I've heard of owners resorting to sound proofing doors and floors to help. That seems extreme but the noise is at an awful level. Surely other Sonata drivers have had the same issue. Any advise would be appreciated.
I don't need advise from anyone telling me I should have noticed the problem when I got the car. I love the rest of it and assumed the road noise was fixable.
