Timming Belt - 2002 Sonata
My Sonata has about 60K miles. The guy at the dealership told me I should have my timming belt replaced - it's on the recommended maintenance at 60K. He then told me it costs around a grand! Anyone have any insite for me? I'm wondering if it's necessary, if so at what milage? How much should this cost? If I don't change it what happens if it breaks? Also, do all hyundai's have timming belts vs timming chains?
Basically I'm wondering if I should get it fixed and pay the $ or try and sell/trade it and get something diff - I like my sonata it's been very good to me thus far and if I sell/trade i'd like to get another hyundai but might not if this timming belt is an issue on all models...

RE: Timming Belt - 2002 Sonata
Hi, Just changed mine on a 04 sonata 2.4 dohc with 62k on it ,Would say yes change it, first of all its a interferance motor ,that means if the belt breaks it pushes the valves into the pistons an its good bye motor, Now as for takeing it to the dealer check around an find a shop that can do it cheaper, I did my own ,not a real hard job to do, an belt cost 48 bucks an inter one was only $18 ,so not bad . But depends on what motor you have as for belt cost. dealers labor cost is way to high , Good luck Slim
