I have a 2000 manual transmission Tib with 65,000 miles on it and I am taking it back to the dealer for the forth time with apparent fuel problems. It began about 4 months ago when it began shutting off while driving down the highway – not very safe at all, eh? I took it to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong. Several days later, it went back, this time because it would not start at all. They replaced the fuel relay (it had scorch marks on it, they said) & fuel pump and it ran for a few weeks before it started choking again until it would not start. This time, they told me that pins needed adjusted on the pump (what does that mean?). It ran for about a month and a half and now it’s shutting off again intermittently. Sometimes it is while I am accelerating… sometimes while I am idling at a light…

Has anyone else had these issues? I love my car and I do not want to get rid of it, but it’s beginning to be unsafe, unreliable, expensive, and a general thorn in my side! Aarrgghh!

 

When the car randomly shuts down, it could be many things. One thing I've seen on a Ford Escort I had was that the contacts in the ingnition switch warped when they got warm and they would lose contact and the engine would just shut off. Some things I've heard with Hyundais is the Crankshaft Position Sensor, and the Throttle Position Sensor. Perhaps suggest your dealer check those. Make sure they are using Hyundai's troubleshooting chart and not just fishing around in the dark.

 

Thanx for the reply! Actually, it's appearing to be a little lessrandom at this point - it seems to shut off after about 10-15 minutes. I drove it to the dealer across town and I had to pull over after 12 minutes. I waited about 5 minutes and it started again, albeit a little unwillingly ( had tried several times before it would catch ). This is consistant with the other times I took it in.

It is at the dealer today, so I'll mention your suggestion when they call. I will post the outcome too for anyone interested. They have honestly been good to me in the past, so I can cut them some slack, but I really want to get this problem solved!

i'm not sure if this applies to hyundais, but i had a chevy s10 before my tibby, and i had a problem similar to this, after about 5 mins, it would shut down, and once it cooled off, it would start again, it was a series of many problems, but the big problems was a sensor on the alternator, and in turn it was frying my computer. the chance of the same thing happening to a hyundai that happened to a chevy is very slim, but its worth a shot.

 

I got the Tib back from the dealer and they said that it was the wires at the harness - they were loose and when they would heat up after about 10 minutes, they would lose contact and shut off the fuel pump. I do not know where these wires are, but I suspect that the dealer had been in contactwith them in the process of replacing the fuel pump and/or relay. It sounds like someone was a little sloppy at the dealer when my car was there previous times, so I'm a little hesitant about taking it back there!

 

yeah, i've noticed dealers just trying to get you out as soon as possible. They don't like to look at more than one problem at once... lol As far as that, you could always try another dealer. Now that you have it back, is it working right this time?

 

Sorry it took so long to reply! I got the blue sled back and I've driven it for about two weeks without any symptoms. It appears that all is good, but it took the car about a month and a half to crap out this last time. I sincerely hope thatthe dealerwent over their work at least three times before putting it all back together again! Like I said, I've been happy with their performance before, but it does seem like this was a little rushed.

The biggest problem with going to another dealer is the distance - twice the car needed towing and it would cost $100 to one dealer and $75 to the other. I guess I could scream and yell and demand that they pay for my towing, but I don't think they'll go for that!

If it dies again, I will certainly stop back here to report it. I don't want to see anyone else have to deal with this issue! Thanx for all the posts!
