Default Am I getting ripped off by the dealer?

I have a 3 year lease on my Genesis. The lease is expiring soon. I called Customer Service in Texas and was told I can buy this car for $20k + sales tax. The $20k is the residual value of the car at the end of the lease.

When I went to a local dealer (in California) to pay for the car, I noticed that the total I need to pay was about $1000 higher than what was mentioned from Customer Service. The finance guy at the dealer said I have to pay $1000 for them to inspect the car, to make sure the car is safe, in order for them to sell it back to me with all the warranties in tact. This doesn't sound right, so I decided to hold off on everything.

Anyone familiar with this process who can advise? Thanks.

I see you've had no reply here. From what I know, this is completely normal for the dealer to do what they're doing re the inspection, etc.

I would not pay them the money though. Let them eat it.
