Default Excel

First of all my name is Randy, I am totally new to Hyundai this is first one I ever owned, I have driven a few, but never even worked on one before unless you count body work? so I am pretty new to this automobile.

just bought a 91 Excel tonight. it had a few problems, hope I didnt buy too big of a problem.

it idles too fast, but I hear a vacuum leak, so I assume thats the cause of the fast idle? also when under load at idle it is shaking? like on an old miscle car when it had too much cam. but runs great as soon as it pulls off idle, I have to have 1 foot on gas & one on brake pedal at stoplights to keep motor from trying to stall out. maybe a lockup converter failing? just asking? but it will rev just above idle at stoplight to keep it from dying.

the worst thing I notice is the oil light comes on at idle when hot in gear at stoplights, but not it idle when not in gear, even when I cut idle down. unless too low, I also noticed a few slight surges at 50mph tonight.

the car runs out great, has good power, smooth, no unusual noises automatic tranny shifted good, & had under 80,000 original miles & was clean so I picked it up figuring maybe a good tuneup? a cleaning of throttlebody & sensors, & fixing vacuum leak & replace main & or rod bearings I would have an inexpensive kick around car. it does have a couple of issues inside I havent looked at. passenger door glass crank messed up & glovebox wont shut. I will examine when I have daylight my next day off on Thursday.

I put close to 100 miles on it between last night testng it, & tonight driving it home, no complaints other than what has been mentioned.

I gave $550 for it & it has new tires, new battery & a new alternator put on this year. I figured it hopefully can give me my moneys worth of miles out of it? if car last long enough to run tires slick I figure it more than paid for itself unless I spend too much repairing it lol, & tires are probably 95% or more tread

when I get everything repaired I plan a timing belt replacement for good insurance!

any other suggestions? this is just going to be a beater & a backup daily driver type for my wife who cant drive my stick shift cars, she has a Mitsubushi Galant with over 175,000 miles & begged me to find something incase of problems, but I may put some miles on it myself I actually like driving it better than her Galant. I have hated driving that things since the day she bought it, but its her car & she enjoys it & I tolerate it. she tolerates me not owning an automatic otherwise, so she cant drive my cars, lol.

any good websites to read up on this model? any timing belt replacement diagrams? or other tech information?

Thank you,
Randy

The vacuum leak is probably the main cause of both the high idle and shaking. I'd fix that first and then see how it runs.

Welcome to the forum and to Hyundai ownership.

Check out http://www.hmaservice.com. This site will have all the tech information you need for servicing the car. Also has owner's manuals you can download. Navigation of the site can be frustrating at times (requires IE as the browser and you will need to install some utilities), but the info is all there.
